En nyfödd varg! :-)

Why are most red wolves referred to by numbers instead of names?

Those numbers are what are known as studbook numbers. A studbook is a pedigree that identifies a red wolf with its own unique "studbook number" and follows that animal throughout all events in its lifetime. The studbook is an important tool that is used when making breeding and transfer recommendations.

So, the lack of an actual n
ame does not imply any lack of caring toward the animals! There are some red wolves that have been given names by their caregivers. But their official name remains their studbook number.

Beginning this Friday we will be featuring some individual wolves on a weekly basis, and whether they have names or numbers, they are an important part of the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan!
